Toga Procedure – The Next Big Thing in Weight Loss Surgery?

by dew3157 on Feb.28, 2010, under Tools Reviews

Terminology note: TOGA(r) is a registered trademark of Satiety, Inc., the company that manufacturers the device. I am in no way associated with that company. This is merely an informational article on a new medical technique and is not meant to be an endorsement.

Right now, about a dozen obesity centers across the United States are recruiting patients for clinical trials of a procedure known as the transoral gastroplasty, or TOGA for short. This new approach to weight loss surgery eliminates the need for surgical incisions. Instead of entering through the stomach, as with the traditional gastric bypass, a flexible device is inserted through the mouth. With the aid of a skilled surgeon, the device is guided into the stomach area where the next step is performed — stapling.

According to the summary posted at the clinical trials website of the National Institutes of Health: “The TOGA procedure is an incision-free treatment using a set of flexible staplers introduced into the mouth and esophagus to create a sleeve in the stomach … The TOGA sleeve limits the amount of food that can be eaten and gives the patient a feeling of fullness after a small meal.”

If you are familiar with bariatric procedures in general, that last part will sound familiar. While this new technique uses a different entry point (the mouth) it achieves the same end-result as the gastric bypass — it segments the stomach to reduce the patient’s gastronomic capacity. If the patient feels full with less food, weight loss will soon follow.

As of this writing (October 2008), the new procedure is not yet available across the country. The Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved the new device and technique. Pending the results of the clinical trials, which are scheduled to conclude in 2010, the FDA’s approval could very well follow suit.

The Rise of Less-Invasive Techniques

This technique i00000755s an example of the rising popularity of less invasive surgeries. As medical technology advances, new paths are being utilized to perform the same function. The distinction of “open” versus “laparoscopic” surgery is often used to describe these differences. On the one hand, you have a procedure that makes larger incisions to “open” the patient for the surgeon. With laparoscopic techniques, on the other hand, the incisions are much smaller as the result of using innovative and tiny devices such as cameras, cutting tools and (in the case of the TOGA procedure) stomach staplers as well.

Most of the less-invasive alternatives to open surgery offer several key benefits. They are generally less painful afterward, as a result of the smaller incisions, and they also minimize recovery time.

Valuable Printer Features

by dew3157 on Feb.28, 2010, under Tools Reviews

Printers have come a long way since the advent of the old dot matrix variety. Modern consumers have a number of high tech features available when choosing a new printer. These can result in a higher resolution, faster print speed, excellent pictures and graphics for illustrations, and more efficient use of ink, as well as other unique qualities.

Among the several different types of printers on the market at this time, the simplest is probably the single function ink jet printer. Because it is quite inexpensive, this printer can still be the best choice for many users although it is considerably slower than a laser printer. The black and white print quality is excellent, and the cost of ink is generally less than that of a laser printer. An inkjet printer also does a great job printing photos, whether on regular paper or on photo stock. This printer also creates outstanding greeting cards or banners for special occasions.

If a printer which produces the finest text is the most important deciding factor, a laser printer clearly ranks above the ink jet. For printing volumes of standard black and white text, the speed of a laser printer makes it a valuable asset. Even though a laser printer costs more and the ink cartridges are more expensive, the print is of professional quality. Laser printers, however, don’t work well to reproduce or print photographs, especially when using card stock or other specialty papers.

Manufacturers have recently flooded the market with all-in-one printers. These can be either ink jet or laser, but they are multifunction machines. These all-in-one printers can scan, copy, fax, and print. Some have feeders, sorters, and staplers. These machines are nice for both home and business offices because the all-in-one design saves space. All-in-one printers work extremely well with an inter-office wireless connection.

One type of specialty printer that may be valuable to some consumers is the photo printer. Although this printer can turn out regular black and white text, it has features which are ideal for people who like photography. These might include a number of memory card readers so that the printer can work without a computer, paper trays that more closely match normal picture sizes, or an option for editing. This feature allows the photographer to design special effects, to apply borders, or crop photos easily. Some printers even have a special program for taking the red flash effect out of the eyes of those in the photograph. For those who want to print their own pictures without using an outside service, a photo printer is a good investment.

Because 000008D2people use printers for different purposes, a printer that has the features that a teacher or lawyer would find valuable is not necessarily the printer that is perfect for an artist or business owner. Before purchasing any printer, a user should read the list of features, evaluate the cost per page, and check consumer reviews of a particular brand. There is a printer on the market that has features exactly right for everyone, but finding it may take some research.

Backpack Tips by a Seasoned Veteran

by dew3157 on Feb.27, 2010, under Tools Reviews

As a college senior entering his final semester en route to a 6-year Bachelor’s Degree (not by design, but by indecision and poor scheduling) I consider myself qualified in the subject of backpacks. Of course, I do not wish to label myself as strictly a ‘school backpacker’. In fact, as an Eagle Boy Scout I was no stranger to the damp hikes of the Washington wilderness with my sturdy external frame hiking pack. I have since traveled the world for work with my protective laptop backpack, and I now frequent the Rocky Mountains with my trusty mountain bike and hydration pack.

Now that my backpack credentials have been established, I would like to throw in my two cents in each category. I’ll start with school backpacks. Organization is key! I need a nice spacious main compartment with a multi-pocketed front pouch for all my nick-knacks. Pens, pencils, erasers, staplers, and (most importantly) candy and gum. Snacks. That’s what got me through high school. I also need some serious durability. Normally you would pair the term ‘durability’ with your outdoor packs as a requirement, but regardless of how dedicated you are to Mother Nature, I would love to see a man who has used his hiking pack as many times as the college grad has used his school packs since kindergarten. The fact is, your school backpack takes a beating. It doesn’t help that at the end of a wonderfully frustrating exam-filled day you skid your backpack across the ground (with it’s 85 lbs of books and loose paper) and kick it all the way home. I was lucky if a school backpack ever lasted me a full school year, let alone two. That is, until I found my current treasure, a beautiful North Face backpack that has served me well for over 2 years and still looks like the day I got it.

As for hiking backpacks, comfort is key! Yes all the fancy straps, clips, and cords are neat, but when you’re 2 miles into a 30 mile hike and your back and shoulders already feel like silly putty, you’re not too worried about your secret pockets and fancy bells and whistles. In fact, you’re burning everything you can spare in the evening fire to try to shed some weight. My advice, get a nice, ergonomic frame with a vented air-passage on the back and a padded, sturdy waist strap. Your legs and hips can support a lot 00000422more weight much more comfortably than your shoulders can. Make sure your pack is sized to fit your body type (some even have adjustable frames to get it just right).

Laptop backpacks should be all about protection. Make sure your notebook computer fits snug and has good padding all the way around. Backpacks tend to get tossed around and you don’t want your notebook computer to take a hard shot on the corner without padding to absorb the impact. Ogio makes a great line of laptop backpacks with a special attention to style as well. InCase makes some as well with a very soft, thick, padded pouch.

My modest investment in a hydration backpack was one of my smartest moves as an sportsman. You can’t have too much water when your out in the wilderness on a bike, board, or climb and a hydration backpack is the smartest and easiest way to keep hydrated. It can typically hold from 1-3 liters of water and they are light and snug enough that you barely even notice it on your back. They generally have additional compartments to hold a Cliff ba00004000r, knife, and some tools, for example.

Wherever life takes you, make sure your belongings are tucked a way in the appropriate backpack. To see a great line of sport, work, school, and travel backpacks, visit the official website of BackpackStash.

Copier Features – What to Look For?

by dew3157 on Feb.27, 2010, under Tools Reviews

Here’s an overview of some of the most useful features out there for office copiers.

An automatic feeder. With an automatic document feeder, you can copy multi-page, multi-sided documents without having to copy each page individually.

Unlimited sorting. Look for a copy machine that sorts copied pages without need for sorter bins.

Finishing features. Features such as automatic staplers, three-hole punchers, saddle-stitch binders, folders, and other finishing steps can save you a great deal of time after you copy.

Different types of paper supply trays. If you’re planning to copy on numerous paper stocks including letterheads, legal size papers, transparencies and so on without having to reload the machine each time, look for a copy machine with several different paper sources that can handle these types of papers.

Wireless connections. The latest development in office technology is wireless functionality-allowing you to copy a document simply by sending a file to the copier from your computer.

Energy-saving capabilities. While traditional copy machines don’t save significant amounts of energy during “sleep” phase, energy-saving copiers will typically offer a “sleep” mode that conserves energy while the machine is not in use.

Scanning, faxing and printing. Consolidating your technology by buying a multi-function machine can save you office space for separate machines, and it can also save you money-using your copier as a printer can save approximately 20% of per-page costs compared to printing separately with a laser printer.

Not every copier has the same features. While shopping for copiers can be a little overwhelming at first, it’s worth sorting through the available features to find a copy machine that’s perfect for your office.

Get the Best of Laser Printers

by dew3157 on Feb.27, 2010, under Tools Reviews

The category of printers is well suited for voluminous tasks. Though expensive, laser printers are very fast and are available as monochrome, color and multi-functional types. To suit diverse needs, these printers come in different models like personal, work group and network printer. Unlike ink jet, these generally use toners that cost less than the cartridges in ink jets.

Though the resolution is slightly similar to ink jets (600x600dots per inch – text, 1200x600dpi to 5760x1440dpi – photos) the speed is incredibly faster (20pages per minute) Other features of laser printers include the paper handling mechanism, memory, connectivity, compatibility, etc. Varied sizes of papers and frequency of printing are handled by different types of printers. The higher range includes many options like multiple output trays, staplers, scanner, copier, collator etc. Similar to the computer memory, printers also have a memory of their own and more memory supports printing of heavy graphic laden documents.

PictBridge is a standard that allows connection of a digital camera directly to the printer. This saves all the time taken in downloading pictures. The users generally use these types of printers to give good quality print. When compared with ink jet printers, the laser printers price is relatively high whereas the quality and speed are the best when compared with other types of printers. Basic parts that are available in this printers are corona wire, discharge lamp, fuser, laser scanning unit, toner hopper, photo receptor drum and developer roller are the few to mention.

The main advantage is there is no smearing of ink in the paper after the completion of the printing process. Xerox Printers are available in various models and types based on the need of the user. When compared with the ink jet printers, these are relatively less and the features in these printers are absolutely the best in terms of speed and the picture capability. The advantages of laser are also relatively high when compared with ink jet printers.

The printing output given by these printers is of great quality and the pixels are also of high rate which gives a good clarity of the image. These are the advantages that are available in the laser printer000021BDs when compared with other types of printers. In terms of maintenance, these types go handy for the users to handle with and are highly recommended for the new users.

How to Set-Up the Requisitioning Procedure

by dew3157 on Feb.27, 2010, under Tools Reviews

Any firm big or small uses tools, equipment and materials to carry on their business whether for administration or operational purposes. Creating an office alone will need basic items like stationeries, ball pens, pencils, note pads, rubber bands, paper clips, pair of scissors, staplers, staple wires and many other items in order to work efficiently.

Tools, equipments and materials used in operation will vary according to the type of business. A hotel, manufacturer/distributor, accounting firm, textile, transportation by land, sea and air and many other businesses will require various items that will cost lots of expenses if not monitored properly. Without proper requisitioning procedure in place uncontrolled expenses will have tremendous effect on the business income.

Requisitioning procedure will require individual in authority to carry on the process. They are the people responsible and accountable for what and how much is being spent. They have to make sure that the item/s requisition is/are not in any way decreased profitability but rather increased business profit.

Persons responsible for the requisitioning process will be as follows:

1. Requisitioner – is responsible for the quality and quantity of item being requisitioned. A proper description and specification of each item should be clearly specified in the requisition form. This is to avoid things like wrong description of purchased item, delay in the operation due to its unavailability, money wasted in the case of non-refundable item/s or they were items purchased oversees and to return them will cost more than the total amount of the item. Most of the time we find item/s kept on the storage shelf for year/s because they were not purchased according to specification. It is also important that the request made is justified and an inventory to show shortages will be helpful. The requisition should be made on a timely manner to prevent unavailability of the stock which will jeopardize the operation of the business.

2. Purchaser – is responsible for searching the item according to its description and or specification. He will contact suppliers that were dealing with the specific item then prepare the list of suppliers that can supply the item according to standard, the purchaser will ask0000078C all those suppliers to send samples of the item to be shown to the person requisitioning and the latter will choose the company with the best sample material and reasonable lower price with the same quality as per specification.

3. Financial Controller – checks the availability of funds and back-up or justification for why the requisition of the item is needed. Make sure that the price selected is reasonable as per specification. Double check with the storage area personnel to make sure that the specified item is not available or no longer sufficient to last for the period.

4. General Manager/ Owner – Reviews the requisition, makes better suggestion if needed and approves the requisition form.

To summarise how the requisitioning procedure is done will be; first the person requesting for the item will fill-up the requisition form with the proper description and specification. The form is then submitted to the Purchasing Department who in turn will search for at least three suppliers who are able to supply the item based on the specification and samples provided. The purchasing agent shows the samples to the requesting department and if a supplier is chosen will then send the form to the purchasing department to finalize the paperwork to order. The order form will then be submitted by the purchasing department to the finance department. The Financial Controller checks availability of funds and back-up paper works and if everything seems to be justifiable will sign the order. The Finance department endorses it to the General Manager/ Owner for his information and approves it if the latter finds it necessary since after all he is the primary decision maker of the company.

Specimen of Requisition Form

ITEM Description/ Specification Qty Unit Price Total Amount

Requesting Dept. Purchasing Dept. Finance Dept. General Manager/Owner

The above details can 00001883be used as a format or as an example of a requisition form.

With the above procedure, the needed item requested is up to standard or specification. It is being noted or recorded, monitored and controlled by the department or persons responsible and accountable for the purchase.

How to Deduct Office Expenses on Schedule C, Line 18

by dew3157 on Feb.27, 2010, under Tools Reviews

One of the most common business deductions for the Sole Proprietor is office expense. While this expense it not usually overlooked by the typical small business owner, there are a few potential pitfalls you should be aware of.

The kinds of items typically included in office expense are obvious: postage, copy paper, stationary, file folders, staplers and staples, pens/pencils/markers, etc. Virtually every little item on your desk is a deduction.

What is not so obvious are the items that often end up on Line 18 that should be deducted elsewhere. Here are a couple of these to watch out for:

Home Office Expense. If you qualify for the home office deduction, aka the “Business Use of Home” deduction, by all means take it! But it does not belong on Schedule C, Line 18. Instead, you must complete Form 8829, Expenses for Business Use of Your Home. The total expense from Form 8829 is then transferred to Schedule C, Line 30.

Office Equipment and other depreciable personal property. Things like computers, monitors, printers, telephones, fax machines, desks, file cabinets, bookcases and so forth – these are commonly found in an office, so shouldn’t they be reported in the “Office expense” line of Schedule C? No. These items are known as “fixed assets” or “depreciable property” and they must first be reported on Form 4562.

Many Sole Proprietors quality for a nifty write-off known as the Section 179 deduction, which entitles you to fully deduct th00000901e cost of these items in the year of purchase; but to qualify for the Section 179 deduction, you must first list these things on Form 4562 and then transfer the Section 179 deduction amount from Form 4562 to Schedule C, Line 13, “Deprecation and Section 179 expense deduction.” This whole area of depreciation and fixed assets is not for the financially faint of heart, so if you’re not well-versed on this topic, please consult with a tax professional.

Why Giving Away Stuff Works

by dew3157 on Feb.26, 2010, under Tools Reviews

At this very moment, I have on my desk a small, plastic, yellow slinky. The name Home Depot is written across the side of it in black letters. I received this slinky in the mail a few years ago with a colorfully printed advertisement. Here it still sits on my desk, and here the company name remains, always in front of me. What do you think is going to happen each time I need to buy some kind of hardware? What company do you think I am going to immediately remember and pay a visit to?

Here lies the power of giving away free things. I have a pen on my desk with the name Railway Service Contractors written across the side. I have never needed to by a train, but I suppose if I ever do, I will know where to go, just as your customers will when they have something that they need from your company. What you give away can vary greatly. Knowing your audience is the best way of getting their attention by giving them something they can really use.

When people receive a letter in the mail and they just know it is an advertisement, what are the odds they will even bother to open it? However, what happens when a box shows up? Who can resist opening it and seeing what they have been sent? What are they going to find in that box? Make it something you know they will love, and right on top of it they will find your advertisement. Use your color printing effectively to make sure the advertisement is just as fun to look at as whatever you are giving them for free. In those moments after the box has been opened you have the person hooked, so why not take advantage of it as much as you can?

Get creative in what you send them. What does a slinky have to do with home improvement? Does it really matter? That is not to say the standard pens, calendars, penlights, or mini-staplers are not perfectly fine things to give people free. They have stood the test of time for a reason, but there is still something to say for the creative giveaways that stick with a person for years to come.

The goal when sending anything to people is to get them to take interest in your company. Sending an advertisement in an envelope is cheaper, true, but it is also more likely to be ig00000EC8nored. Giveaways can create a memorable experience that ensures the people will carry your product name with them for long after they first receive it. Just remember to put that colorfully printed advertisement in the box along with it. After all, you have their attention, so you had better make the most of it.

The Helpful Handouts

by dew3157 on Feb.25, 2010, under Tools Reviews

I am sure this scenario is going to be familiar to a lot of people.

You are walking through a trade show down a long line of booths. All around you there are people standing in front of the various stands waiting to talk to whoever is willing to stop and check them out. Above the booths you see all sorts of colorful signs and banners. You see posters up along the sides of the booths telling you what the company name is and what it is that they do.

Every booth has a table and on all these tables you see a whole slew of various things. You see a number of papers and other details about the company’s products and services. And next to these you see whatever it is that the company is handing out for free.

Yes, they are going to be handing out something for free. This is a staple of the tradeshow that each booth will have some little thing to give people to help keep the company name close to them.

You get handed pens, staplers, little Frisbees with a company name on it, and of course along with all of this you also get all sorts of different papers and sheets detailing all sorts of information.

Now the question becomes, what do you do with all of this? Did you bring something to hold all of this information in? I am sure you have had plenty of occasions where you did not, and so you have these loose pages you need to try to sort and keep track of.

To anyone going to a trade show this is something to consider, but not when it comes to yourself. Instead think about the people you are going to be handing your information to, and invest in some folder printing beforehand.

What is more helpful: handing someone four or five loose pieces of paper for them to sort through, or handing them a folder with your company name on it and all of your information already organized inside. You are making it easier for people to keep your information, and you are handing them something that has your company name on it.

Folder printing is not going to be a very expensive thing, either. Plus, if you get a really large order of folder printing done you can be sure to have them ready for a long time. Your company name and logo are not likely to change anytime soon, meaning you would not have any reason to alter the design on your folders.

Not only do you increase the odds of them keeping your information because it will be so easy to, but you are also making a good impression on people.

When you are just one booth in a long line of booths at a trades how you need to do anything you can to make yourself st00001F80and out. Perhaps folder printing is the best way for your company to get above the rest.
